Season Opener - From Classical to Jazz

Musica Viva opens its 17th season with one of the pillars of chamber music for strings and winds, the Brahms Clarinet Quintet. Also featured on this program will be Klezmer music, and a clarinet quintet by Serbian composer and clarinetist, Ante Grgin, highly recognized in his country. Musica Viva welcomes musicians David Ehrlich, violin, and Benjamin Wyatt, cello, well known to our audiences, as well as Rami Solomonow, violist from Chicago, Nikola Djurica, clarinetist from Belgrade, Serbia, and Sibbi Bernhardsson, former member of the Pacifica Quartet, now a faculty member at Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Autumn Joy - Chamber Music for Piano and Strings

This concert features chamber music of various combinations for piano and strings. The program includes Mendelssohn Sextet, known for the great virtuosity demanded of the pianist, and the unusual instrumentation of violin, 2 violas, cello, double bass, and piano. We are also excited for the Virginia premier of Richard Ratner's Piano Quintet, which has the same instrumentation as the Schubert Trout Quintet. Also included will be a piano duet for 4-hands. Musicians include Elizabeth Schumann and Teresa Ehrlich, piano; David Ehrlich, violin; Diane Phoenix-Neal, and Amadi Azikiwe, viola; Benjamin Wyatt, cello; Samuel Suggs, double bass.

This concert will feature the beautiful and charming Beethoven String Trio in E-flat Major, op. 3, the uplifting Mozart Piano Quartet in E-flat Major, K. 493, and the dramatic Smetana Piano Trio in g minor. Avanti Ensemble members David Ehrlich, violin, Benjamin Wyatt, cello, and Teresa Ehrlich, piano are joined by guest violist, Amadi Azikiwe.
International Journey of Strings Music for Chamber Orchestra

Members of the Hong Kong String Orchestra, the Yao Jue Music Academy, and the Renaissance Music Academy (RMA) Chamber Orchestra join forces to present beautiful music for chamber orchestra, as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the RMA. Yao Jue, violin soloist; David Ehrlich, conductor. The concert will include classical music for chamber orchestra as well as Chinese music. This concert will be repeated at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC on February 3.

Musica Viva concludes its season with the return of the Rolston String Quartet, after their successful concert last season. First prizewinners in the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Rolston Quartet has recently been named the new fellowship quartet-in-residence at the Yale School of Music.
